Glossary of Web Design

In the world of web design abbreviations and acronyms are used to speed up the work load. Below is a list of the most used abbreviations, acronyms and programs in web design.

Accessibility

When designing a website a designer must think about the accessibility of the website, how everyone including visually impared can use the website. To ensure the accessibility of all the websites we design, we use the guidlines set by W3C.

Anchor Text

Is this text hidden within a hyperlink that is only visable when the cursor is moved over the link. This anchor text's tell the user where the link is going.

ASP

ASP or Active Server Pages is a server side scripting engine that was developed by Microsoft. ASP scripts can add dynamic content to your website.

Blog

Blog(s) are an online diary that can used to moniter the update of a website or can be used as a basic day-to-day dairy. Blogs can be very powerful tools, they can be used to tell users about the latest updates applied to the website or can be used to inform users about upcoming events.

CMYK

A colour model that specifies colours by the three parameters cyan C, magenta M and yellow Y and black K. This model of colour is used in four-colour printing processes.

Copyright

This right that prevents others from copying your work. For more information on copyright click here

CSS

CSS files or Cascading Style Sheets are web designs best friends. One style sheet can be linked to many web pages, changing the style sheet will effect all pages linked to that style sheet. This saves large amounts of time.

At DAVISWebDesigns we work largly with CSS files experimenting with new ideas.

Design/Development

Whats the difference?. The first part of designing a website is done on paper and brainstorming on a white board. Once the paper stage is over this is then handed over to the development team who put the paper in to action.

Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is a WYSWYG (What You See is What You Get) web design software program. Very useful for creating websites fast, however when using Dreamweaver creates messy bulky code.

At DAVISWebDesigns we do use Dreamweaver its a very good tool for code checking we also use other basic text editors such as Notepad and RapidCSS

eCommerce

eCommerce is the name for online purchases of goods using credit and debt cards.

At DAVISWebDesigns has excellent knowledge of ecommerce and can provide you with shopping carts and other ecommerce tools.

eMail

Electronic mail (eMail) is a way of directly communicating with someone of the internet using email address e.g. info@daviswebdesigns.co.uk The first part (info) is the name or department you any contacting, then the @ symbol then the domain of the address (daviswebdesigns.co.uk)
